Desire and Focus

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

When I first got out of school and started working I read a lot of self help books.  I wanted to become successful and school did nothing to prepare me for a successful career.  If you are inclined to read these types of books or, for that matter, any book that tells you how to succeed at anything, I can save you a lot of time.  Desire and focus are the only two words you need to know.

Desire can be rephrased as passion, need, or whatever it is that gets you motivated  Without it, you’ve got nothing.  If you have enough of it, you’re hard to stop.  The greater the desire the better the results.  If you want to start your own business, you need to have enough desire to actually do it.  It’s my opinion that the lack of desire is the reason for the vast majority of failures.

Focus also can be rephrased.  The most accurate would be hypnosis.  Self hypnosis.  Hypnosis is simply repetition.  Tell yourself sometime enough times and you believe it.  It is the core of all marketing and it works.  How do you learn in school?  By repeating things until you remember them.  The same thing changes peoples minds and beliefs.

Take these two core words and compare them against most things you know.  Organizations - religious or secular strengthen their beliefs with repetition.  Both left and right leaning news media do exactly the same thing.  The more you can fire up the desire and the more you repeat your message the stronger it becomes.

You can use this in two ways.  One is to recognize it when you see it (literally everywhere) and the other is to use it to make yourself a better person.  Fire up the desire and really focus on your goals and most importantly - don’t stop.  You can even fire up your desire by focusing on doing just that.

This works great for exercise.  Keep that desire burning to get into better shape and focus on it even when you’re not doing it and the rest takes care of itself.  I think most people who ride a lot do this without even know what they are doing.  It’s nice to know you can carry the same principles over to other parts of your life.
